Enspiren is not in a position to advance loans against royalties to authors. However, this frees the author from any legal obligation to repay the loan.
We pay royalties on a quarterly basis based on the money we receive from customers and wholesale companies.
Royalty amounts vary depending on a) the format of the book, b) whether it is sold from our website or through a wholesaler.
Royalties are paid on a quarterly on every sale - and are paid when we receive money for the sale. We pay 15% royalties on the net amount received for print editions.
The royalty amount is the percentage of the amount of money that Enspiren Press receives. If the book is wholesaled, or sold at a discount, whatever amount is actually received will be used to calculate the author's royalty. No royalty is earned when the book is distributed for review, is damaged and destroyed by the wholesaler, is a bookstore return copy and is returned/destroyed by the wholesaler, or on authors copies.
Royalties are paid within 60 days of the end of the quarter the money is received.
Books are not sold until the payment is received and has cleared. Payment is not considered 'received' from paypal distribution until six months after the purchase (after the expiration of paypal's customer protection service.)
Ingrams may pay for a book up to six months after selling it.
Bookstore returns, and bookstore purchases may not be paid for up to 9 - 12 months after the sale.
Authors receive a royalty statement showing books that have been ordered but not paid for, sales that are paid for, and royalties earned.
Zero. We do not charge anything for publishing books. There are no fees for editing, cover art, layout.
However, we do suggest that USA authors copyright their work in the USA.
This is a short list of the places we sell. We are a small press, but we have distribution in the US and UK.
We do not generally offer bookstore returns
Our books will be available through other outlets, but we can never guarantee they will pick up our books. We are not about to pad this list. We will add other outlets to this list when other distributors pick up our books
We are a small press, but we do expect the same loyalty and commitment as authors give larger presses. You will be expected to promote and advertise your book. There are thousands of authors trying to break into print and establish a full time career. Authors who only want to 'see' their name in print can serve their purpose better by self-publishing.
Enspiren Press is owned by a very aggressive marketing/publishing company. Our commitment is to our authors and their books. This includes Internet promotion, media advertising, and conventions. However, if no one knows who the author is, and cannot reach them, or find them on the web, it is very difficult for us to sell the book.
Authors need to build a fan base. They need a myspace lens, website, blog, and to participate in places where readers meet. The more friends an author makes, the farther the book's buzz will travel.
The best time to start promoting a book is when it is time to submit it.
You own the rights to your book.
You contract those rights to a publisher for a short time, usually 3 years. You license the book's production and sales rights to the publisher. Now you no longer have the right to produce and sell the book - even giving away free digital (PDF) copies. The owner of the book rights receives royalties in exchange for those rights, based on the number of books sold.
You can sell author copies or copies purchased at an author's discount. You may put a link on your website to sell copies from our shopping cart.
When the contract is over, Enspiren press can not print any more copies.
Many authors worry about publishers stealing their ideas. The best thing to do in this case is to copyright the book before submitting it.
No. We work with authors to create a cover they love. However, the art work remains the property of Enspiren Press. Authors may not use the art work after the contract expires.
Our editors are trained and experienced. They are working with authors to make their books better and improve their success rate.
Authors must follow the editors suggestions. Grammar mistakes, poor communication skills, and local dialects are not a writing style, but a sign of poor writing. It is the writer's job to edit them out of their novel.
The editor will make suggestions to improve the book's content. Then, when the book is complete, they will do a line edit.
However, it is the author's responsibility to make the changes. Editors do not have the 'legal' right to change a manuscript. They may only offer suggestions.
Enspiren is committed to good author/editor relationships. Temper tantrums from either will not be tolerated. The editor is not 'working' for the author. They work with the author.
REPRINTS - If I submit a reprint, do I need to listen to the editor's suggestions? Yes, each publishing house has a slightly different audience and format.
Enspiren's contract allows authors to opt out of a contract 90 days after Enspiren Press receives a written copy of an agreement to break the contract. After three years, the contract may be broken in 30 days. This is standard.
All rights to the book, except cover art, ISBN number, and bar code reverts to the author.
11. How soon will my book be released?
This depends on you. It can take a year to get a book into print. However, if we receive a book that is polished and needs relatively little editing, we will be able to release it sooner. At the moment, we are releasing books in 7 - 10 months.
12. If Enspiren signs one book, will they sign another?
Enspiren believes in fostering a strong relationship with their authors. Series books, like historical novels and mysteries are usually built around a family or a single person, this makes it more likely that we will take a second book.
We will work with authors to have future books ready for publication with our house, but at this time, we cannot guarantee acceptance.
13. Will my book automatically be available in print?
Enspiren will put all books into print within six months of ebook release. However, only copies that are heavily promoted will be added to the extended distribution system.
14. Will I need to buy copies of my book?
No, Authors do not have a minimum number of books to buy. However, if authors are interested in buying books, we will sell them at discount. Authors who buy 20 ebook copies, or 100 copies may purchase at wholesale.
Authors do not receive royalties on copies they purchase.
Enspiren cannot give out print copies for review. But, authors will receive 10 PDF copies for their own use, and for sending out reviews.
15. Can I make my own duplicates of PDF copies?
No, this is illegal.
16. Kill Clause?
We include a kill clause. At any time, for any reason, the author or publisher may cancel the contract.
We do not offer bookstore returns at this time.
