Anita Davison
I was brought up in North London, part of an extended family born within the sound of Bow Bells and fed a diet of family stories about wartime London and the Blitz.
The city landmarks everyone calls tourist attractions, uncles, aunts and grandparents took for granted as being in their neighbourhood. The Tower, St Pauls, Charing Cross, Trafalgar Square, the Embankment of the Thames. I loved them all on sight and even as a child, I could ‘see' and even ‘smell' what life was like there a long time ago. I don't really believe in reincarnation....but well, who really knows.
In 2003, my mother died, and one of the last things she said was, ‘When are you going to finish that book of yours?' It was too late for her to read it, but I'm still here and the questions was valid. ‘When was I going to do something with the batch of notes I had been playing with for ages?'
I've used writing as an outlet most of my life, to write letters to friends and family I found difficult to talk to, or stories to clarify something which bothered me. My passion for history, and my compulsion to put things on paper combined, and so in 2004, I finished it.
On the advice of a friend, I joined the Historical Fiction Critique Group. This was against all my instincts, convinced that after a couple of hard critiques, I would throw the book in a corner and never touch it again. But the opposite proved true. The group had a lot of criticisms and suggestions, certainly, but every one of them told me they liked my work.
Then the owner, Anne Whitfield, told me I had a great story, the next stage was to learn how to turn it into a novel. Well that was all the encouragement I needed and from then on, I became totally focused on the book. Anne submitted it to Enspiren Press and no one was more surprised than me when they offered me a contract. Anne became my editor, and together we created a happy ending when Duking Days Rebellion was released in summer 2007.
Hmm... Not quite.
I've discovered that writing is an ongoing thing. You never stop learning and there are more stories and characters rattling round in my head demanding to be heard. I'm not a one book wonder after all and my second novel, Duking Days Revolution is due for release this spring.
